Roku HD-XR Player Review

Roku HD-XR Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

I am really enjoying my new Roku XR. The setup was extremely easy and intuitive. I am running the ROKU XR wirelessly off of an N-Router (Trendnet 633) located on the other side of the house. I am getting "4 dots and HD" (best quality) with no interuptions in play.

My only complaint is that I have to go to Netflix and enter movies I want to watch on the Netflix Instant Queue before the Roku XR will play the movie. So basically, I have to go to my computer, find my TV shows or movies, enter them into the Instant Queue on the computer then goto the ROKU and my selections will be available to watch. I really wish I could scan for movies and shows thru the ROKU.

Other than that, the setup and playback quality is excellent using HDMI. Recommended :)

UPDATE 6/10/10 : ROKU and Netflix have fixed the annoying need to select your movies on your computer and then go to the ROKU to see your queue. Now you can search for movies on Netflix from inside the ROKU. BRAVO!!!

Engenius EAP9550 Wireless N 300Mbps Access Point/Repeater Review

Engenius EAP9550 Wireless N 300Mbps Access Point/Repeater
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

I got this access point because I wanted a more or less permanent, whole house solution for wifi access, with RADIUS authentication for my own devices and an open network for guests.

The Engenius brand is made by Senao which (I believe) makes some equipment for netgear and others.

I like the smoke detector form factor. It installs pretty easily onto the ceiling. The holes are not lined up exactly with a ceiling box which I think it should have been. But no big deal, just use the supplied anchors and screws and attach it to your ceiling. You can turn off the LEDs if they get too annoying. Since they are blue they are bright at night.

The internal antenna performs well for its intended application which is access inside a building. At least in my case the signal did not propagate well outside which necessitates a separate AP for outdoor use. Not a deal breaker by any means. Power over ethernet is a must for this device, and it works well in that regard.

The LAN side is 10/100 which isn't really a big concern but it would have been nice to have gigabit. But it is rare to exceed 100Mbps throughput anyway on 2.4GHz 802.11n.

Lots of features including all of the encryption methods (WPA, WPA2, WEP), RADIUS connectivity, NTP, even a graph which tracks traffic. It has VLAN tagging which works fairly well, and a management VLAN which handles the web interface, ntp and RADIUS traffic. I currently have mine setup with three VLANs connected to a pfsense firewall. One VLAN is bridged to my LAN and associated to my primary SSID which uses WPA2-RADIUS. This authenticates against FreeRADIUS on the pfsense box. The second VLAN is associated to a different SSID, is open and is a separate subnet and firewalled off from my LAN. This is for guests. The third is a management VLAN which handles the web interface, RADIUS traffic, ntp etc and is not associated to any SSID.

Everything works really well. Throughput is excellent on b, g and n.

However, it wasn't always this way. The firmware it shipped with (v1.1.2) had a bug where the unit would not connect to RADIUS at all. v1.1.3 had the same problem. Downgrading to an earlier version (v1.1.0) fixed the RADIUS bug but made the unit so unstable it was unusable. Version 1.2.1 fixed everything and now the unit performs flawlessly. So as soon as you get this unit, UPGRADE YOUR FIRMWARE! (and use the WIRED connection when doing so otherwise you'll brick your unit).

Another minor quirk is the DST settings. You have to set exact dates for DST. This means that you'll be setting the dates every year, since the dates for DST changes every year. Just leave it at GMT and avoid the hassle. The web interface will also force you to close and reopen your browser and relogin if you time out. If you use tabbed browsing you have to close all your tabs and restart your entire browser. You can also access the web interface from only one IP at a time. I suppose it's a security feature but it gets annoying if you change IPs or are on a laptop and move from wireless to wired (which you might end up doing when configuring this unit.)

Tech support is a hit or miss. I sent an email and it bounced back with an error. Two days later I get a reply from some guy saying he will run some tests and get back to me. No communication from them for weeks and then they release the new firmware, problems fixed. I write them back to tell them that it works, and a new tech support person starts over with me as if the previous conversation never happened. Since it was working now I told them just close the ticket.

Overall this is a nice access point and really nice for a whole house, conference room, hotel/motel or office setting where you want something discreet with a decent set of enterprise features. But as I said there are a few quirks, while not a deal breaker are a bit annoying.

NETGEAR XE102GNA Wall-Plugged Enet Exte Review

NETGEAR XE102GNA Wall-Plugged Enet Exte
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

I wanted to get a connection with my desktop computer and my xbox in the basement. To do that, I used a wireless bridge coming from my parent's router and wired to my own wireless router downstairs with the intention of eventually getting a working connection to the internet- when this worked, it was great, but it was no fun to try getting it to work again once a connection was lost. So, I looked for another hopefully cheap solution.

After reading everyone's comments about this product, I decided to try it out. Like the title says, there ain't enough stars here! I'd give this 7 out of 5 stars if I could. Just plug in an ethernet cable into the adapter, plug that into the wall, and do the same again for the other one where ever you want it to be. Check the product you plugged it into for an internet connection. Then just sit back and see how easy it was, especially from not having to buy additional cables, setting them up and running them all over the place! It uses the power lines in your house! Our family lives in a house from 1992. My purchase here was a two item kit, and since, I've purchased an additional adapter for our DirecTV DVR now with On Demand capabilities through the internet. They are still working great!

Actiontec MegaPlug 85 Mbps Ethernet Adapter & 4-Port Hub Review

Actiontec MegaPlug 85 Mbps Ethernet Adapter & 4-Port Hub

Got this set to hook up our new Dish Vip722 receiver so we didn't have to have a phone line in the room. Also needed to attach the new Samsung TV to the network to use it's internet features. Since the hub has 4 port, it allows us to attach other game machines or computers directly to our router downstairs for max speed.

Worked out of the box without any adjustments needed. It is truly a plug and play product.

I have 3 of the MegaPlug adapters and the 4-port hub supporting our two dish receivers and connecting my daughter's gaming machine to the internet and have had no problems at all.

High recommended!!!

Enter the MegaPlug 4-Port Hub. By adding multiple Ethernet ports to your network, suddenly, the possibilities are endless. Now you can send data from a computer in the study to one in the family room or use the printer in the bedroom from a computer in the kitchen. You’ll be amazed at what you can do! Motorola ADSL2+ 11G Wireless Gateway 400MW 4PORT Managed Switch Review

Average Reviews:

If you are a Verizon DSL customer, you will probably not be able to connect immediately to Verizon DSL service with your new modem, due to their WAN IP Lease expiration issue. However, after disconnecting the old modem and waiting for a few hours, the lease on the WAN IP should expire and the Verizon server will issue a new WAN IP to the new router. From that point on the auto-configuration worked like a charm for me. My advice:
1) don't call Verizon customer service - they are clueless about this issue
2) don't call Motorola customer service - they told me that the router just does not work with Verizon
3) disconnect your old modem the night before your new Motorola shows up. That way you are ready to go immediately.

After this issue resolved, no problems, works great.

Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Pro 500 GB USB 2.0 Ultra-Portable External Hard Drive STAD500100 Review

Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Pro 500 GB USB 2.0 Ultra-Portable External Hard Drive STAD500100
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

This drive works great with my pc desktop and my new 2010 macbook pro with no need to mess around with format, it just works right out of the box with the included software.

I use this drive as a synced drive ot take my documents, music, and movies on the road with me. I take my macbook with me and the integration between the 2 different computers is seamless. I even have it set up as a shared network drive at home when attached to the pc and my macbook can access the files over the network which is pretty cool.

The main reason I got this drive over some others out there is because it boasts of mac and pc functionality without having to reformat, which it does, and it also has the option to upgrade to firewire and USB 3.0 which I know I'll want. Like the last reviewer said, the first reviewer is inaccurate. This drive comes with the dock and the portable usb adapter. With the adapter attached it looks like one piece which I like. The USB 2.0 could be faster in my opinion. If you transfer directly it seems to take longer than some of the other desktop drives I've used but I guess that's the trade off with such a highly portable drive. Seems to transfer faster on my mac than my pc. Hoping to get USB 3.0 on my desktop and see what that does in the future.

If you use it as a synced drive to backup files or take them on the go then you hardly notice the software running in the background. It seems to pick the right moments to sync and doesn't interfere with other tasks. It has a lot of software included but I chose to only use the sync application on my pc and did not install the rest and only let it install the drivers on my mac and no software. Pretty simple to do and the drive didn't put up a fuss when I deselected some of the other included software.

Overall very happy about the size, style, and functionality of the drive and would get it again.

I knocked one star off for no APO shipping option. I had to get this from tigerdirect which has absolutely no problem shipping small electronics to APO's unlike amazon.

** UPDATE ** Now 3 star
The memeo software started to become a huge pain. I take back what I said about it picking the right moments. Seemed to start running all the time for no reason. Also, it was taking up twice as much space on the drive than it needed. I had 180GB of stuff in the folder it was set to back up but only showed approx 140GB remaining on a 500GB drive (so 180GB was taking up 360... really annoying). I reformatted and tried again several times and every time it took twice as much space on the drive as needed. My mac and any other computer registered the same amount of storage left as well. So I've abandoned the continuous backup and am just going to do it once a month now manually. For that purpose it works fine and still is seamless between my mac and pc which is more than you can say of a lot of drives. However, another gripe, read write speeds are no where near advertised. Seems that the USB hard drive manufacturers need to rethink their marketing strategy. They advertise the theoretical max of the technology, USB 2.0, 3.0, eSATA... etc. However, the drive speeds, software limitations all limited that to a fraction of the theoretical max. The pro model gives you about a 1 min 0 sec transfer (to the hard drive) of a 1 GB file vs the non-pro of about 1 min 8 sec. I wouldn't call that 40% faster, would you? and neither is no where near 480 mb/s. I wouldn't and did not expect that but I can see a lot of consumers, like my parents generation, being taken in by false claims like that. Pretty dishonest if you ask me.

Brother HL-2170W 23ppm Laser Printer with Wireless and Wired Network Interfaces Review

Brother HL-2170W 23ppm Laser Printer with Wireless and Wired Network Interfaces
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

I've been buying Brother laser printers for several years now - first the HL-1240, and then the HL-1440. Both were used in my home network via the Windows printer sharing function, which means that the computer to which the printer is attached must be up and running in order to print. The 1440 recently started malfunctioning, and rather than deal with its problems I decided to get something new that I could connect directly to the network.

I went looking for the HL-2070n, but these are no longer stocked in local stores, and I wanted a printer quick. Instead I found this model and the larger, more expensive HL-5250dn. After playing with both of them for a few minutes, I felt that the 5250 was too noisy and clunky sounding, and kind of big. It's probably a good printer, but I went instead for the quieter and less obtrusive HL-2170w.

The wireless capability is a nice feature, but not really important to me right now, since the printer sits only three feet from my Linksys WRT54G router and I don't need to move it around the house. So even though I'm able to use the easy wireless setup, I went with a wired network connection instead. Setup on my three computers was a breeze. I followed the easy instructions and everything worked as expected. If I try the wireless installation later, I fully expect it to go just as well.

Now that it's in place, the printer seems to be doing what it should. Output is fast, paper is not badly curled, and quality looks fine. The printer driver also has the advanced features I've been accustomed to with my earlier printers. My only minor gripe is that I don't like the minimalist control panel that consists of just three LEDs and one big button. Since my earlier printers had the same kind of thing, I know I'll have to keep referring to the user manual in order to perform routine control panel functions and interpret any unusual alerts.

It'll take a while to know whether or not the printer has any serious shortcomings, but I'm more than satisifed so far. Considering the low price, the hassle-free installation, and the results I'm seeing, I'll give it five stars.

Moxi 3-Tuner 500GB HD Digital Recorder Review

Moxi 3-Tuner 500GB HD Digital Recorder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

While the Moxi isn't perfect, you can certainly rank it as the top device in it's class. I've used Tivo, Replay TV, the DirecTV DVR, Windows Media Center, as well as the Comcast Motorola DVR. The Moxi is the best device available.

I currently own a 3-tuner Moxi with 1 additional Moxi Mate. I'm going to start with the Moxi mate to get it out of the way. Some reviews are saying it's slow - and this is partially true. The mate IS slower than the main Moxi unit - but it's not unbearable, or even a big deal. For the most part, I didn't really notice it. The interface is still fast, there is just a 2 - 3 second time before a picture shows up when switching channels. This is because the Mate has to buffer the channel from the main moxi unit over your network. It's really, really not a big deal. The picture on the Mate is perfect, and being able to pause a show in one room and resume it in another is seamless and simple to do.

Where is the huge benefit to the Moxi mate? You don't have to buy another $500 DVR, you don't have to pay another subscription fee to Tivo or your cable company, and it works seamless with the main unit. As a bundle, the Mate only costs $199 - substantial savings over another Tivo/Cable DVR.

The main Moxi 3-tuner unit is fast, sleak, and loaded with features in a surprisingly easy to use interface. Setting it up was a breeze, Comcast came out and put a card in, and the Moxi paired up and had all my channels with no fuss. The Moxi only requires 1 single M-Card from your provider, and Comcast gives you the first card for FREE. Which means no cable card rental fee. So I have 3 tuners along with a Moxi mate, giving me 2 TV's running on DVR with zero subscription fees and zero cable card or any rental fees. Brilliant!

I won't go into much detail about the interface itself, there are plenty of videos on Moxi's site that show you this. The interface is VERY easy to use, and it looks great. The first thing I did was go through my channel lineup and disable all the channels I don't watch - foreign language, music, and pay-per-view. Now when channel surfing the guide, it's just the channels I like. Moxi also keeps a favorites list of the channels and shows I watch most often, very cool. The recording works wonderfully and scheduling is great too.

You can manage your DVR on Moxi's website. I was on my laptop and was inputting shows I wanted to watch on their website and setting up new series recordings. My selections instantly showed up on my Moxi DVR. Works as it should, and again, simple.

The biggest seller for me was the PlayOn software along with Moxi's ability to interact with my computer. For the Moxi to connect to my computer required literally ZERO setup. I have a Windows 7 machine. This was important for me, as I download a lot of movies, videos, etc. In the Moxi, I simply select my computer, and voila, all my content readily available. It plays through the Moxi with perfect clarity and control.

PlayOn is FREE with Moxi, they give you a full, free license when you purchase a Moxi box. This software also runs on your computer, and allows you to connect to Netflix, Youtube, Hulu, Pandora, Amazon, etc. This means you can cancel your HBO and expensive premium channels and fire up a cheap Netflix account. For $8 that Netflix charges, I get tons and tons of movies I can stream instantly, plus DVD's in the mail, for less than an HBO subscription from the Cable company. And the Moxi handles all this perfectly and simply. I have also used YouTube and Hulu extensively, both work great too.

Overall, this box is as good as it gets. By cancelling my DVR rental fees from Comcast, I'm saving $30/mo on that alone. With the new content that Moxi has opened me up to, I cancelled the digital preferred package as well. Overally the Moxi is saving me roughly $40/mo and providing me content and a DVR experience that far surpasses anything else available. I'm even selling my HTPC as I just don't need it anymore now that Moxi integrates so well with my network for streaming content.

The price for the Moxi bundle may seem high, but the unit itself is the same price as a Tivo, and no additional subscription fees for which Tivo charges $400 for lifetime per unit. The price of the Moxi ultimately becomes quite a steal when you look at the cost of ownership over 2 or 3 years.

I've used all the DVR's you can imagine over the last 10 years, and I simply couldn't be happier with my Moxi purchase.

I have been using this router for more than 2 years. I updated the firmware to DD-WRT immediately after I got it and I suggest that everybody do the same thing. Apparently Tomato also works well. On the other hand, if you do not know what DD-WRT or Tomato is, this router is probably not for you.

My only two reservations: 1) it gets very warm. 2) when using it to share a wireless connection, you can only use it to share an unsecure connection; i.e. it can't associate with a WEP or WAP access point.

TRENDnet 450 Mbps Wireless N Gigabit Router TEW-691GR (Piano Black) Review

TRENDnet 450 Mbps Wireless N Gigabit Router TEW-691GR (Piano Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

A basic wireless router which has features and functions that generally work as advertised, including port fowarding. Most home users wouldn't need any more. The 3yr warranty is best in industry, just hope you don't need to collect.

Simple to set-up & configure ( ignore CD):
First, plug in router, connect to modem and PC via ethernet cables; then disconnect power to modem and router. Then, re-connect power to modem and wait for about 30 secs., then connect power back to the router. Now re-boot PC's and the router will have assigned IP's via DHCP. You can type 192.168.10.1 into browser to access advanced router/wireless set-up & settings ( username:admin ; leave password blank ).
-------------------------------
User interface dumbed-down from prior model (633GR)

No QoS (contrary to some descriptions).

Even with these features DISABLED, router allows 'WAN Ping Respond' and 'Remote-Management'. 'Remote-Port' assignment for 'Remote-Management' is ignored. These problems could be a security issue (use strong p/w).

Router REBOOT takes way too much time and did NOT clear a problem requiring a power re-cycle.

No activity log accessable to user.

LAN connection (RJ-45) sockets are too snug & too closely spaced & interfere with antenna motion.

Only connected device's MAC address are reported, not the local computer "name".

While Trendnet support is responsive, helpfulness decreases as problem complexity increases.
---------------------------------
Factory installed Firmware (v1.0.9.135, 9-Nov-2009) is NEWER than that offered at Trendnet.com for this model (v1.0.8.16 Sep/8/2009) ...strange?

This router replaces a Trendnet TEW633-GR model I really liked except for one problem... which I had hoped the TEW639GR would fix.... it didn't. I returned the 633 and kept the 639 ONLY because my cost for 639 was less than 1/2 that of my discounted cost for the 633 model.

Features I miss from my TEW633GR:
variable wireless transmitt power, local computer names, MAC address look-up for DHCP reservations, log file, Streamengine(i.e. QoS), much more advanced router controls, stand for vertical mount, unobstructed antennas motion, Bridge-Mode ...

item is recommended if you can acquire at 40%+ discount although the TEW633GR is clearly a better router.

VTech IS9181 WiFi Internet Radio with Access to Online Content Review

VTech IS9181 WiFi Internet Radio with Access to Online Content
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

This is my third WiFi Internet Radio.

VTech really did their homework on this one.

I only just got it, but as I do have experience with these, I feel I can comment.

Just a few points:

- The color screen is very high-quality and a really nice thing to have (more than I expected)
- Set-up and programming are very easy (similar to all the others, but there's a set-up wizard that's helpful)
- Sound quality is as I expected; very good, with good base and treble, and levels (different stations have different volume output).
- Found all the stations I looked for via the radio, except one, but I was easily able to add it via the website.

Cautions:
- No network jack -- wifi only (not a problem for me)
- Not really a proper clock radio. The controls and alarm silencing sequence aren't very much like a true clock radio, so if that's a primary function for you, try the Sagem/Aluratek unit.

I really haven't found a single thing that's been a disappointment or "negative". It's just as good as I hoped it would be, if not better. I suppose one could say it's "big", compared with the AE radio or the Freecom MusicPal, but compared to the Logitech Squeezebox, it's of a similar size. It looks better in real life than in the photos.

No Pandora, but don't care. My iPhone does that, and it's limited anyhow. It's easy to find an internet radio station that plays music similar to any channel I might devise.

The remote is a wonderful feature to have in conjunction with the forward-facing color screen, and it does RSS fees (identifies station, song, program, etc..., unlike any of the Reciva units [I could be wrong on this point, but most of those seem to be essentially similar on-screen]).

I fiddled with the file streaming feature. Worked immediately and well (Windows machine). All shared folders were easily found and explored and mp3's playable.

There is ONE huge negative that I've found: NO TIMER!! This is a major oversight, but it's not unfixable. The AE WiFi Internet Radio lacked one too, at first, but it was implemented via a Firmware Update. Hopefully VTech will do the same. I don't see why they couldn't too, and I fully hope and expect they will (I will write them and ask them to).

Delighted with this unit, otherwise!! Highly-recommended!

The Netgear FS116E 10/100 network switch has great build quality and very low power consumption. The 2 units I purchased have worked flawlessly for over 6 months. The vlan support is a terrific feature for such a low priced switch and works as expected. Vlan configuration is through a small application on the enclosed CD and is easy to configure. With vlans, multiple subnets can be carried over a single ethernet cable. Highly Recommended.

Cisco WAP2000 Wireless-G Access Point Review

Cisco WAP2000 Wireless-G Access Point

I had a home office and a Linksys WRT54g router. I wanted to secure my network more and have more LAN ports, but still have wifi. So I bought this AP, a Linksys VPN firewall Router, and an 8-port switch. Had the AP, the switch, my printer, and NAS plugged into the VPN Router, and my computers to the Switch. Worked flawlessy. This baby has serious range. I would go get the mail (our driveway is about 1/4 mile, and my iPhone would still be connected to the wifi this thing puts out. Also it is so much more secure than a regular 4 port wireless router. You can assigned the IP for it, which will be the gateway for the devices connected. Secure, safe, and awesome. Not for the technically challenged. But easy to you if you should be using it.

Product Description

The WAP2000 is a Wireless Access Point ideal for small businesses that want to expand their existing wired networks or create new wireless networks for the workforce or guests. It features RangeBooster technology that is compatible to standard 802.11g but with a range up to two times farther and throughput by up to 35 faster. Unlike ordinary wireless technologies that are hampered by wireless signals that reflect off walls, ceilings, and other objects, RangeBooster uses these multiple signals with two smart receivers at each end (router or access point and client adapter) to boost range and throughput speeds. As a result, a RangeBooster solution reduces or eliminates wireless signal deadspots in offices and other buildings so users can connect to the network in more areas. The WAP2000 comes with 3 dBi antennas for increased power, also helping to extend the range of the Access Point.

Canon Pixma MX410 Wireless Office All-In-One Printer (4788B018) Review

Canon Pixma MX410 Wireless Office All-In-One Printer (4788B018)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

This printer is suitable for a small home office. It has a simple setup, fast text printing, and good network support with some nifty scanning options, but will take up a lot of space on the desktop and may have some issues with Windows XP machines. The printer comes with two standard size ink cartridges (XL versions are available for re-order), a USB cable, a phone cord, and a sample box of small photo paper. Because I already have a fax printer, I did not look at the fax features.

Pro:

It has good specifications for this price point. It prints around 8.5 on the new printer scale in black, and about 4 when printing black. It doesn't take a long time to print like some HP inkjets I have owned - the print starts and completes very rapidly. The document feeder will hold about 15 pages or so.

The paper path is straight through, meaning that it is fairly simple to print on photo paper and Avery labels due to the a smooth paper path. The printer is designed such that the input and output trays are at very steep angles, so they don't take up as much room.

The printer has a nice feature where one can press a single button and scan to a selected PC connected to the home network. The file then goes into a directory on the computer for later use. This feature works with the document feeder or the flatbed scanner, so one could easily scan in several pages. It is a great time saver because you don't have to "scan in" the document; it is "pushed" to the computer you select while you stay at the printer. Note here that for maximum scanning resolutions, the manual recommends using the flatbed rather than the feeder.

The wireless setup was as described in the manual, and although it wasn't particularly detailed, the steps did work. But there wasn't a lot of explanation for the less experienced person, and the printer does not support the newer easy network setup options. I found it a lot easier to install on the Windows 7 machine, where one can simply add a printer via the built it menus; on XP one has to install the CD, which also downloads software at some points in the process. The network setup requires a USB connection to a computer; there are no setup menus to manually enter the network keys. But at least they include a cable.

The device has the capability to scan to a thumb drive (or an external hard drive, I suppose), and the same USB port is used for PictBridge printing directly from a camera. The printer can connect to Bluetooth devices - but needs an optional Bluetooth module, so I could not test it.

The printer does not use a power "brick", so the power cabling around the printer is clean.

Con:

There is no backlight for the LCD display, and I found it hard to read without shining some additional light. I did not expect the same display quality as an LED screen, for example, but the device needs some kind of backlight. Plan to keep a small flashlight handy, or be sure the area near the printer is well lit.

There is only one color cartridge, rather than separate cartridges for each color. That means if one runs out of (for example) cyan, the entire cartridge has to be replaced. This kind of system is more expensive to keep in ink. I'm a bit surprised, because my last Canon MX offered support for individual cartridges. Therefore if you print a lot of color, this device may be more expensive than a machine that supports individual cartridges.

This printer is very large compared to other printers I have owned, including another Canon MX series multifunction device. It is designed so that it is not too tall (maybe a foot or so high), but is about 30% deeper and a bit wider than other multifunction printers. Basically, it is designed wide, deep and flat, whereas many printers today are more vertical. Additionally, the only path for the paper is via the input tray - on the back of the machine, taking up another several inches of depth. Maybe this form factor is needed for some people; but in any case be aware and check the dimensions to be sure it suits your purposes.

The scanner is a little bit slow, but acceptable for light use.

There is only one input tray, and it holds only 30 pages. That isn't a lot of paper, and I would not recommend this printer for other than light home use unless one likes feeding paper to the machine.

On my XP machine, I was unable to scan directly into Word 2000; the scan would preview but not actually scan. On my Windows 7 machine with the exact same version of software, I was able to scan directly.

There is no SD or other card slot; one has to have a USB drive to print directly without a computer connection. Most printers have some kind of support for a memory card.

Not really a true drawback, but several places in the owner's manual there are procedures for cleaning up the area around the print heads and interior. This is the first time I've seen such instructions, and it leads me to believe that the printer design may put some ink residue around the output area that may need to be cleaned up periodically.

Summary: This is a decent printer at a decent price. For relatively light home office use it is acceptable; it prints fine and can scan directly to a remote computer from the printer itself, which will save time if a lot of stuff has to be scanned. If one prints a lot of black it will not be too expensive to keep in ink. Recommend for the smaller office or personal use.

Creative Labs Xmod Wireless Music System with X-Fi Technology Review

Creative Labs Xmod Wireless Music System with X-Fi Technology
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

None of the spec sheets mention mac and an email inquiry to Creative resulted in them telling me that it was not mac compatible, but I ordered it anyway and it works great. In fact you can plug anything into it to stream to a receiver--iPod, etc. I have a mac mini running leopard.
Make sure you use the remotes, so you can turn off the Crystallizer effect if you like. There is no software interface---again, making it OS independent.

Here is my set-up. The mac mini connects to the USB input of the transmitter (so then you don't need the separate power adapter--use this only for an iPod, etc). That's enough to stream to the xmod receiver across the room, which is attached to a set of powered speakers.

However, I also wanted to play through the speakers attached to my stereo tuner/receiver, which is near the computer. So I have the audio out from the xmod transmitter connect to one of the inputs on the stereo tuner/receiver---I use the VCR-input ports. (This was a mini to split RCA connection.) If you have a Phono input that is probably better since it accepts a weaker signal---if you go into VCR or CD you need to crank the volume. I tried using a pre-amp, but my pre-amp was causing distortion--I originally blamed the xmod, but that was not at fault.

Finally, I want to be able to stream the radio from the stereo tuner to the xmod receiver. No problem, I pluggeed the VCR-output ports on the tuner into the RCA audio-input port on the xmod transmitter. Just be careful switching the stereo tuner/receiver from VCR (playing, say iTunes on the computer) to radio, since the volume is cranked up to compensate for a weak input.

So far, I m very happy with this product.
