Panasonic Wireless 802.11 b/g Network Camera and Pet Cam (BL-C30A) Review

Panasonic Wireless 802.11 b/g Network Camera and Pet Cam (BL-C30A)
Average Reviews:

Let me begin by offering my overall experience with this camera. I had no difficulty at all setting it up for either wired or wireless operation. The included software worked flawlessly allowing me to easily operate the pan and tilt operations, and allowing me to record sessions.

For my purposes, my intention was to supplement a surveillance system I currently have in operation using two high resolution Toshiba network cameras. I was hoping to be able to get half-decent quality from a camera costing about 1/2 of the cost of the Toshibas. Unfortunately, that's what I got...about half the image quality.

In general 640x480 does not provide sufficient resolution for surveillance as you cannot make out features in any detail. For example, you may be able to see someone entering your home, but you'll never be able to identify that person. Overall clarity was ok, better than, for example, another Linksys camera that I tried, but still I was unable to identify facial features in a person standing just 10 feet from the camera (using all of the highest image quality modes). Comparing this to my Toshiba cameras operating at just 800x600 is like comparing night to day, as the Toshiba is able to distinguish relatively fine detail.

All in all, for the price, it does what it advertises, and is better than other lower cost cameras that I've also tried (like the Linksys). However, I've found no camera in this price range to be able to work as a true surveillance camera. (I suggest the Toshiba IK-WB11A as the entry point of true surveillance network cameras.)

Brother MFC-8680DN High-Performance Laser All-in-One Machine with Networking and Duplex Review

Brother MFC-8680DN High-Performance Laser All-in-One Machine with Networking and Duplex
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

Great print speed (32 ppm!), very good print quality. Legal size flatbed scanner. A workhorse of a machine for a small office and a really great price (though I did find it cheaper at my local Costco). Reasonably priced refills on the 8,000 high capacity copy toner cartridges mean that the cost-per-copy is superior to most other brands.

This is a solidly built machine, not a flimsy feeling hunk of plastic like some other brands I might mention (HP, Xerox Phaser series, Samsung). This was my second Brother printer to replace a different brand (this one replaced a substandard Xerox Phaser multifunction machine, and my HL-2170W replaced an HP Laserjet 1020). Brother is doing it right, and in my opinion, is the best small business printer/MFC manufacturer these days. I've shopped around for a long time and tested a lot of machines before buying, and Brother was the best I saw.

***UPDATE June 27, 2011: Nothing has changed thus far...the router is still working perfectly fine.***

Let me begin by pointing out that I just purchased this yesterday, so I can't comment on the long-term reliability of this router. That being said, I had to post a review given that I'm very satisfied with the process thus far. I'll update this as time progresses.

This router was a replacement for my old WRT54G that served me well for about four years, but was acting up (dropping signal, slow connections, low range, etc). So I decided to purchase this model (E2500 as a replacement).

The whole time before this new router arrived I was dreading the prospect of setting it up given my experience with my old WRT54G router. As soon as it arrived, I followed the instructions in the packaging and then put the CD into my macbook to launch the installer. The installer itself simply involved pressing a few buttons and then it did the rest! My network was up and running in about five minutes- with the installer doing all the work for me.

What I did notice was that the installer created a guest account that wasn't protected like the main one. This concerned me, so I logged-in to the advanced settings using the router's IP address at 192.168.1.1 using my browser (you should preferably use the computer you used to setup the network because it's already connected to the network). I think the default is to leave the login name blank and to use your default network password as your login password. Once I was inside, I disabled the guest account, but it turned out that there was a password in place- it's just that it's browser-based apparently (your guests will be able to login to the network itself, but will only be able to access the internet by typing in the password in the browser). So if you want to leave the guest access available, simply write down the default password that shows up on-screen or setup a new one. I also changed the default password used to login to my router in here as well (under the "administration tab"). So, to clarify, the 192.168.1.1 address brings up a menu where you can modify your router's default settings to your liking. I think this was a criticism of the "easy" setup- that it doesn't let you customize your router. I actually see this process in reverse- the "easy" setup configures your router to work properly given your circumstances. Once it's setup, you can modify whatever parts of the setup that you want to. In my case, I only modified the router password, guest access, and my network key.

Once it was setup to my specifications, I proceeded to update all of my computers with the new network key. I also connected all my other devices to the back of the router (there are four slots).

In regards to performance- my macbook that wasn't getting a signal with my old router works perfectly now. That being said, it's a new macbook, so it's able to utilize the "n" band. My sister has a 2006 white macbook next door that only utilizes G though- she's having no problems either.

Overall, I'm happy i made this purchase and highly recommend it to others. I don't own any other n-routers, so I can't comment on how much "better" this is relative to others. I can only say that I'm happy I made the right choice with this one. I'll make sure to update this review should issues with reliability surface.

EDIT: You actually don't have to login to the router's IP address to access the features I mentioned above. You can simply use the "Cisco Connect" software that came with it. The only issue I can think of is that if you use this software, you can only run it through the computer you setup the router with. The IP method above will work from any computer connected to the network (after logging in with password). The con of the IP method is that it's not as "user friendly" as the "Cisco Connect" method. Ultimately, you should weigh the pros and cons yourself and decide which is best for managing your router. I'll be choosing the "Cisco Connect" method in the meantime just because it's easier to use, but I'll go back to the IP method should anything happen to my computer (where the Cisco software is installed).

HP EX485 MediaSmart Home Server Review

HP EX485 MediaSmart Home Server
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

As an owner of HP's first generation MediaSmart Home Server, I was very interested to see if the EX487/EX485 models were a good upgrade in terms of quality and performance. If you are new to the MediaSmart HS product line, or to Home Server for that matter, you will enjoy what the EX487 (and EX485) offer. If you are a current owner of the first generation product line, the upgrade could be a tossup for you.

I will not spend much time on every capability of the EX485/487, as it is well documented. It provides simple and easy to use centralized storage for your home, as well as the option to backup PCs and Macs. You will also be able to stream media (photos, music, video, etc) to other devices and share photos with family and friends, as well as have access to your files remotely through a web browser. One of the great features of Home Server is the ability to install Add-Ins, most of which are freely available on the internet. You can add the ability to download RSS content, expand photo sharing options, and countless other enhancements. Instead of going through more of Home Server's capabilities, I'd like to focus on the things that may not be noticeable through a photo or product specs.

First, I am impressed by the quality HP has put into their Home Server product line. The product is sturdy and they do a great job of mixing firm metal structure with lightweight plastics. This product feels good in your hands and the design is clean and concise. They fit a lot into a small package. While the server itself is a bit heavier than you'd expect, it is compact and fits just about anywhere.

Second, the EX485/487 got a boost in hardware over its predecessors. The processor was bumped up to an Intel 2.0 GHz (instead of an AMD 1.8GHz) and the memory has been increased to 2GB (instead of 512MB). Do not underestimated these upgrades, as they added a good bit of peppiness to the server. Browsing the server, transferring files, and going through the interface and menus have all been sped up with these upgrades. Storage was bumped up to 750GB (in the EX485) and 1.5TB (in the EX487). You can easily add more storage capacity by dropping them in, adding via USB or eSATA and then tell Home Server to add the drives to the storage pool.

Thirdly, some software features have been added. Online backup capabilities and Mac Time Machine support are at the top of the list. There was also some improvements with the connector software. As an owner of the previous model, I will say that HP has been great at offering updates and I expect that to continue with all of their models. They appear to be dedicated to their Home Server product line.

Lastly, I will say that Home Server has been a great addition to my home network. I work in the computing industry and when I get home I don't really want to tinker all day with my home equipment. I just want my stuff to work and the HP MediaSmart Home Server fits that criteria. Simply put: it just works. I have not had any issues with the hardware or software and I can rely on the product to keep my files safe (that doesn't mean you shouldn't have other methods of backup). If you already own a previous model, the upgrade might be questionable in terms of price and added features. There was definitely a boost in hardware, but it's not necessarily an upgrade everyone needs. Otherwise, I highly recommend this product for beginner or expert.

UPDATE 1/2/2010: HP has released other versions of their MediaSmart Home Servers and I provide this update not only to the EX487, but the HP MediaSmart Home Server line in general. The home server has been fitting more and more into my home network performing additional duties all the time. Microsoft has provided several updates to the OS since. I have restored several files and several systems from the ground up using the server's backup and restore feature. It worked flawlessly. I've used several backup and restore programs and the home server has most of them beat. Restores were quick, efficient, and painless. I've also been using the home server for more access away from the home. The ability to access files and stream music, photos, video (to any PC) has been awesome. I've also been streaming content to my HDTV via an Xbox 360. Again, it has worked without a hitch. The HP EX487, or any HP MediaSmart Home Server, remains to be an excellent buy.

X6 Adsl Modem/router Review

All in all, this is a good product. My one complaint is that the "connection" behind the power button quit working after about 8 months. It will not stay on, even when power button is pushed in. You actually have to sit and HOLD the button pushed in for the unit to get power. We have had to rig it with a piece of wood pushing up against the power button held in place with duct tape and then wrapped tightly with a velcro strap in order to get it to stay connected. Even then, it cuts out and the velcro has to be tightened. I am currently looking for a modem/router combo that has a more traditional power switch as opposed to the crappy "push in" button.

NETGEAR Powerline AV 200 Wireless-N Extender Kit XAVNB2001
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

The Netgear Powerline AV 200 Wireless-N Extender Kit defiantly improved my wireless signal 100%. My main router(Netgear WNR834B-100NAS Wireless N Router) is located across the house from my room and my signal was terrible. I had bought the new Xbox 360 250GB Console with Kinect and thought the wireless signal from my xbox would reach my router, but it only had a 1 bar signal. so I looked around on Amazon and found this product. The day I received the Powerline it took me about 20 minutes to set it up. I noticed that certain wall outlets receive signals differently. So you might have to try a few wall outlets before you can get the most out of your Powerline. The thing I liked about it is it shows a red light if your receiving a link rate of less than 50 Mbps, a Yellow light for a link rate between 50 and 80 Mbps, and a green light for a link rate of 80 Mbps or more. On my Current setup I'm currently receiving 96 Mbps. Now I am playing my Xbox games Lag free with all Four Bars while I'm even on my laptop. Before, the Netflix on my Xbox would only show a one bar signal strength, now I get all four bars and watch movies and TV shows in HD quality! My only complaint with this product is it does basically take up the whole wall outlet, but its worth the signal.

Apple Time Capsule MC343LL/A 1TB Sim DualBand Review

Apple Time Capsule MC343LL/A 1TB Sim DualBand
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

Going on three months of use. I do wonder about some of the posts about this thing dying after 18 months as this particular model (dual band) has not been in existence that long...

As a router, this thing is tops. Used it to replace a Linksys N router. I get much better range and much faster data now on my macbook. Before, in my bedroom, less than 50 ft away from my router, I couldn't watch standard def Hulu videos at all. Now I can stream high def videos without any delays or pauses. Part of it is because I also have G devices (Wii, iphones, etc) and the old linksys was forced to operate on that slower frequency. This thing effectively gives you a separate G router and N router- so my macbook finally can operate at full N speed but still provide service to older devices. This thing smokes the linksys in range and speed.

As a time capsule it works. I backup my iMac and my Macbook to it. I had a Seagate drive before that died after 9 months. So now I have a time capsule and another external hard drive, I rotate between the two to have redundant data for WHEN one of them fails. All Hard drives fail at some point. I do wonder about heat, there's no fan, but it never gets very hot to the touch.

Very happy with it so far.

Slinglink Turbo 1PORT Enet Connection Bridge (SL 150-100) Review

Slinglink Turbo 1PORT Enet Connection Bridge (SL 150-100)

Firstoff, I would say this device does what it is supposed to. Having used several powerline products like this, I will say that this one performs about as well as competing units. That said, there are few caveats I would point out. First, you're only going to get acceptable throughput when both sides of the link are on the same household circuit. This is especially true with older homes who may have gone through electrical upgrades (like mine). Also, your throughput will suffer when you use other electrical devices on the circuit. For example, my video gets choppy whenever someone turns on/off the bathroom light which is adjacent to the bedroom where I have this unit located. For basic internet usage this is not a big deal, but if you're streaming video to a media center like I am, it is somewhat of an annoyance.

Panasonic BL-C210A Internet Security Camera Review

Panasonic BL-C210A Internet Security Camera
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

Bought this camera through one of Amazon's Gold Box Deals for $130. For the price, it's a great camera. This is my second Panasonic network camera. A few years ago I bought their BL-C1A model Panasonic Network Camera and Pet Cam (BLC1A). The BL-C210A is a much nicer camera. The picture image is several times better, especially when motion is involved. You have the option of pan and tilt to look around. You can disable the indicator lights on the camera that lets you know the camera is on. You can also disable or override the privacy mode button on top of the camera. You can configure the camera to email you a picture when it detects motion in your house. Now how's that for peace of mind while you're away? And my favorite is that the camera is powered through the network cable which eliminates the need for a power outlet near the camera. The camera has a threaded mounting hole in the back that can be used to mount the camera to a standard tripod or an optional wall mount. The cube design is nice because it allows you to just set the camera on a shelf or table. The camera is light, so a tug on the network cable can bring it crashing down if it's not secured.

There are limitations with the camera. If you want to view an entire room, you'll need to mount the camera in a corner. It can only pan 41 degrees to the left or right, 10 degrees up and 32 degrees down. The camera is powered through the network cable, but it doesn't support the industry standard PoE. Luckily it comes with its own power injector. You'll need to purchase two network cables to use this camera. One cable connects the camera to the power injector and the other connects the power injector to your router/switch. The cable between the camera and power injector must be shorter than 98 feet. The box says you can only view still images from a cell phone. The website says you can't listen to audio with a cell phone. I haven't tried either. The software works pretty good, although I have found a few minor bugs in it. You have the option of viewing multiple cameras on one screen, but the max resolution for multiple cameras is only 320x240 and not the 640x480 max camera resolution. You don't need a computer onsite to use the camera, but you'll need one to do the initial setup.

Panasonic has nicer cameras than this model, but the prices also get outrageous. $185 (current Amazon price) is not bad for one camera. But after you buy one, you'll want more so you can monitor the rest of the house. That's when $185 per camera starts adding up. If the price drops again, I'll definitely buy another.

Note: The zoom function is not obvious. There are buttons on the screen to do everything but zoom. I discovered you can right-click on the top half of the video to zoom in and right-click on the lower half to zoom out. You can also use the wheel on your mouse to zoom in and out.

Update (March 9, 2010): I did a little research on the camera model (BL-C111A) that the BL-C210A replaced. This camera has a larger CMOS sensor but the same resolution. The old model can pan 50 degrees to the left or right while this model can only pan 41 degrees. The old model can tilt down 40 degrees while this model can only tilt down 32 degrees. The old model had a 10x digital zoom while this model only has a 3x digital zoom. The digital zoom is not very good. If you have a need to zoom in on objects, you'll want a camera with an optical zoom. Some new features added are SSL data encryption for secure viewing over the Internet, power through the network cable, H.264 video compression, and the ability to operate the camera with some models of Panasonic flat screen TV's.

I bought another camera from Amazon to monitor the back door and kitchen area. It comes with mounting holes on the back of the camera so you can slide it down on a couple of screw heads. It frustrates me that you can't mount it flat on a wall and pan 90 degrees to the left and right. I ended up purchasing mounting brackets VideoSecu Ceiling Mount Bracket for CCTV CCD Box Body Pro Camera 2-6 inch Adjustable MCB1w 1A2 so I can mount the cameras in a corner. Again, I really like the ability to power this camera through the network cable. I have the cameras and my network equipment all plugged into the same UPS. This way I can still monitor my house in the event of a power failure. If you're looking for a camera to monitor the baby's room, this is not it. You can't see much with only a night light on in the room. You're better off with a dedicated baby camera. We've had good luck with a baby camera made by Astak Astak 2.4 GHz Pan & Tilt Baby Camera with 2.5" LCD Color Handheld Monitor with Night Vision. It can pan and tilt to see the whole room, can see very well in the dark even with no lights on, and comes with a handheld color monitor. The monitor eats batteries so we just turn it on when we hear something or want to check up on the kids. It also comes with an AC adaptor for continuous monitoring. Another reason why a baby camera works better for monitoring babies than this camera is that you don't have to fire up your computer in the middle of the night to see if your child is awake. A word of warning, many baby camera's operate on the same frequencies as your wireless network. You might need to play around with the channels on both the baby camera and your wireless network until they don't interfere with each other.

2.4ghz 20dbi Panel Antenna Review

2.4ghz 20dbi Panel Antenna

Ordered this antenna and had it shipped to Iraq where I am stationed. Within half a hour I jury rigged a system to place it on top my buildings roof by tying it to a folding chair with some nylon cord and ran a cable to my office. In other words a very VERY redneck rig. I had very low expections....

Using just a 500mw Alfa wifi card I went from seeing 3 or so wifi networks to over 20. Some of them are off of my base which is over 4 square miles in size.... Of those I have found 3 networks which provide me with free wifi and all three of those hotspots are well over half a mile away from where I have this antenna mounted.

So by spending $60 on some cable and this antenna I now have free wifi in Iraq. The normal rate for internet over here starts at $60 and averages around $80 for slow wifi!

Once the 1watt wifi signal booster I have ordered arrives and I permanantly mount the antenna... I will provide a more indepth review! For now and very very pleased.

Product Description

The Antenna comes with MOUNTING KITS. The panel antenna extends the AP ranges in a single floor setting, and it is best to be positioned in the corner of the building. The antenna is point-point, directional transmission so you can connect to LANS between the buildings in the campus settings. The coverage angle is 180 degree. It's used for outdoor ONLY. The range is up to 14700 feet (2.8 miles). The connector type is N FEMALE so strongly suggest use N MALE TYPE LOW LOSS PRE-ASSEMBLIED CABLES for best results.
