TRENDnet 300 Mbps Concurrent Dual Band Wireless N Router TEW-671BR (Black) Review

TRENDnet 300 Mbps Concurrent Dual Band Wireless N Router TEW-671BR (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

This router does exactly what it advertises. Concurrent dual-band w/ N speeds and all the features described above (I won't repeat them here). Setup was a breeze, though I didn't use the wizard and you probably don't need to either as it's all fairly intuitive. Set up the 2.4GHz network with the same SSID/auth as my previous router and all our devices worked seamlessly (3 laptops, 1 desktop, 2 Wiis), and all devices that could see the 5GHz band connected easily with WPA2 enabled.

The only feature that I wish was more robust is the QoS prioritization. Under a prioritization model the firmware only allows a setting of High/Low priority, or 2 levels, rather than the customary 4. Also, you can only add three custom QoS traffic types under this setting and if you game online in addition to VoIP and download torrent traffic heavily then you've already used those 3 slots, with no options for more. This being said, it does allow you to setup QoS with bandwidth allocation settings and that seemingly allows for as many settings you might want. However, if you're looking for an easy way to setup QoS for multiple custom traffic types (based on port) then this likely isn't the router for you.

That being said, speeds are still very good. I use torrents on a private tracker and easily get 1.5MB/s down wired, similar to my previous router. The difference here is that it handles the traffic based on my QoS settings without affecting my other connections, so I can easily play games online with torrent traffic in the background and don't notice lag as before.

Wireless speeds are also solid. Depending on positioning and walls the 5GHz signal easily gets everywhere in the apartment (1000 sq ft), and average connection speed is somewhere around 230 Mbps when not in the same room. This is with both internal WiFi cards on ThinkPad T400 and the TRENDnet 300 Mbps Dual Band Wireless N USB Adapter TEW-664UB (Version v1.0R) which I also purchased from Amazon. 2.4GHz network works as before, which for me is pretty shoddy since I live downtown and there's serious channel congestion here. That was my primary motivation for getting a 5GHz router in the first place and it's done the job admirably. I'm sure, however, that for most people the 2.4GHz band will be just fine.

Overall a great purchase especially for the price at the time. Was 30 bucks less than the nearest competitor online (newegg) and shipping was FAST with Prime! I don't regret the purchase and will by TRENDnet again in the future.

Microcom M2-HP Ubiquiti Picostation Outdoor Access Point Review

I was under the impression, for some reason, that it supported 300Mbps connections. Well, it doesn't. It only goes up to 150Mbps. Not an issue for my setup as I'm using it in "Bridge" mode and it's doing just fine.

One more thing. The packaging says PicoStation M2-HP, but the OS homepage says "M2" only. Maybe that's how it is, but just pointing it out.

X6 Adsl Modem/router Review

X6 Adsl Modem/router
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

I am a DSL user and it seems there are not too many companies catering my needs, which are a combined modem and wireless router. I made the mistake of getting such a box (2wire) from ATT. It would broadcast about 1 meter (I am not kidding), meaning that I had to use an ethernet cable. My next mistake was to get a linksys router to put in front of 2wire (using the 2wire as a modem only). Everytime there was a storm or electrical surge, one or the other reset and claimed the same IP address. I had wires running everywhere and learned more about windows networking than I ever wanted to know. I had to go static IP addresses and bypass DCHP to get anything to work. So, I was trying to choose between d-link and zoom and saw one favourable review for zoom (Lopez), so I took a chance on it. As he says, it works as advertised and I am down to one small box and very few wires. The wireless is faster than the linksys. I only give the warning that, if you are like me and have other things installed that you are switching out, you should uninstall any software and get rid of old network connections. Also, this router has an on/off switch that is set to off. I suffered a momentary heart skip when I plugged it in and no light came on. The manual is fairly good (pdf) but is not savable on hard disk which is not too reasonable (you can print it). Now, if ATT would bundle a quality product like this, it would surely enhance its image as an IP. Does that notion require a Harvard MBA?

D-Link DP-300U 10/100TX 1-USB Port 2-Parallel Port Print Server Review

D-Link DP-300U 10/100TX 1-USB Port 2-Parallel Port Print Server
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

First I tried the NetGear PS101 print server. I liked the spiffy form factor. I could talk to the print server admin web interface and get it to print a test page, but even after many, many hours could never get it to print a document. So I returned it.

After that debacle, I decided to splurge for the HP JetDirect. At first I could only get it to print the configuration page. A visit to the HP support forums turned up lots of references to the JetDirect not working with SP2 and the suggested solution was to uninstall SP2. Ugh. Finally I went to the D-Link web site and copied the D-Link installation guide for XP w/SP2. The main difference was that D-Link suggested installing the print server as a local TCP/IP printer instead of a networked printer and, bingo, I got the JetDirect to print. (NOTE: It still goes over the network, it just looks local to the PC.) However I was miffed that I paid double the price for a device which required a competitors documentation to get to work. In addition, DHCP didn't work and I could never get it to show up in my network neighborhood.

So ... in a possibly nonsensical move of principle and price, I bought the D-Link DP300U and set up it. It's not trivial to install, but after working with the other two devices, a couple hours of install time seems like nothing. Here are a couple tips ...

(1) Do NOT use DHCP. Use a fixed IP address. Unlike the JetDirect, DHCP works. However, it still didn't show up in my network neighborhood and now I didn't know the IP address. There is NO HARDWARE RESET on the device. The D-Link support guy was great. He told me that if I couldn't find the IP address, I would have to send it back to D-Link to be reset (Ugh!). The good news is that he told me how to find it. I went to the router and looked at the DHCP assignment list and got it, and then reset the thing to a nice, fixed IP address in my subnet.

(2) I first set it up as per the instructions as a local TCP/IP printer, which means it's still on the network but looks like a local printer to the PC. It worked OK, but did this weird, long pause ... about a minute ... right in the middle of long documents. Again D-Link support was good. They told me to try setting it up as a networked printer, which I did. Unfortunately, this doesn't have spooling and you're back to 1980's wait-for-printing. Then something weird happened that I can not explain ... after setting up the device as a networked printer, I went back to the local TCP/IP printer that I had set up and it worked perfectly. Don't know how it got fixed.

My PC is a Dell laptop w/ wireless connection to an access point, and then wired to a router and the print server. My printer is an HP Deskjet 5550.

So, in the end I'm sticking with the D-Link product and I am happy with it. I would have rated it 3 stars as an overall product, but bumped my rating to 4 stars because I still thought it was the best of the ones I had tried. The itty-bitty-print-server market could use some improvement.

Enjoy!

TiVo AN0100 Wireless N Network Adapter (Gray) Review

TiVo AN0100 Wireless N Network Adapter (Gray)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

When you understand what this thing really does, it becomes clear that it's an amazing device. Yes, you need to plug it into power, but that's only because it has a built-in microprocessor and internal web-based setup guide and those capabilities require power. This isn't a "dumb," USB-based adapter. It's much more powerful, and it serves as a stand-alone ethernet bridge.

As I mentioned, the basic idea is that this device is nothing more than a wireless-to-ethernet bridge. By enabling it and hooking it to your TiVo's ethernet port, your TiVo simply thinks it's hooked to a hard-wired ethernet connection. The beauty is that it requires no changes to your TiVo configuration. The adapter is detected automatically.

Ok, so it's a wireless-to-ethernet bridge, like many others available. What makes this one different? First, it's FAST, and it gets great reception, and it also works in the 5 GHz band, which is less crowded than the typical 2.4 Ghz band. If you have an N-standard wireless router (or dual-band router) such as the Linksys WRT610, you can fully utilize the power of this adapter. I've tried it using both old-fashioned WEP encryption, as well as the WPA2-AES mode (which is the Draft-N standard encryption protocol). I EASILY get 25 Mbit/sec data rates from across the house and through walls from my Linksys 5 Ghz N router.

Simply put, if you set this up properly and don't get full-speed streaming via Netflix through your TiVo HD, it's due to excessive Netflix server loading (or limits to your home internet service) and not a speed bottleneck in this adapter. Or, your adapter may simply be too far from your router, but I find this adapter to work very well at longer distances.

As a side note, if you hook this adapter to any PC or laptop via the ethernet port, you can use it as your N wireless connection to your router and to the internet. That is, if you have a machine that needs a wireless connection, and you don't have or don't want to put a wireless adapter in it, this device works great as a general-purpose wireless-to-ethernet bridge. You simply connect it to your remote PC's ethernet port and set it up. Thus, it's a convenient way to get a N connection to your N wireless router from a PC or laptop that doesn't have wireless but does have an ethernet port. I love this thing, and it's well worth the money.

One final note for techies... if you use "channel bonding" on your router, that is, joining two channels together to achieve 40 Mhz bandwidth instead of the typical 20 Mhz, this devices takes advantage of that too!
