This one is replacing a 2-yr-old Acer with a 9" screen, 1GB RAM/160GB HDD which I bought at Best Buy for $300+! I leave my full-size laptop at home because the Acer's more portable. I don't install hardly any applications on it; I save that for the home laptop. I only use it for internet access on location or on the road, and I can offload digital images from my camera's memory cards while traveling. It has a built-in SD card slot, and I also pack a USB CF card reader. This way I don't have to bring/buy extra cards for extended trips/vacations. Once home, I connect my Lacie Rugged portable HDD to it to offload the images, then connect the Lacie to the home laptop to process the photos. At home, the Acer resides in the garage as a utility laptop for internet browsing, Googling info for projects, user manuals, etc. I've never had a problem with the first one, and this one's even faster, bigger, brighter, yet still small enough to bring anywhere without weighing you down. Compared to my iPad, it's about the same dimensions except about twice as thick. Yet it's has full laptop functionality for less than half the price. It just doesn't have the iPad's coolness factor, and the touch screen. The only complaint I have is that the keyboard surface is so flat and smooth, that it's difficult to discern the touch pad and the individual keys by feel.

My son-in-law hooked up the NETGEAR® N600 Wireless Router for me. I think I could have done it but I am old and not tech savvy. I needed wireless to get Netflix's on my TV. Anyhow I noticed immediately my internet on the computer is faster. Both our computers are not wireless so he hooked in the old cables without a glitch. Previously, I had a Linksys router non wireless for ages and was happy with it. Sorry I cannot tell you much more about the features since I have little clue what they truly do.

As I was reading the other reviews I saw that someone had done what I planned for this motherboard, i.e. put together a small energy saving NAS device using FreeNas OS. Specifically to be used as a uPnP video streaming server. Since FreeNas does not need much memory I only installed 2 GB total. One thing that was of interest was that this board has a connection and space for a solid state drive (Intel Z-U130). Not sure Intel makes these any more but I found a substitute from [...] the ATP Z-U130 eUSB SSD. I purchased the smallest drive they had 1GB since FreeNas needs little more then 70 MB of space to store the OS and about 35KB for the configuration file.
As set up I used a 1.5 TB HDD and placed the OS on the SSD. No CD or Flash drive is needed. All is working well and the total power is 27 watts in standby with the drive spun down and 34 watts with the drive spinning. You can't get much better then this. With the on-board Gigabit ethernet it comes out to be a big winner.
The MO also has room for a mini PCI slot. A wireless card can be placed into this. Perhaps when I get tired of the NAS drive I will use it for a kick ass wireless router.
One last thought, since as a NAS device no video is really needed the free PCI slot can be used for more SATA drives.

Ooma Telo Free Home Phone Service Review

We purchased an Ooma Hub & Scout in April 2009 to replace a Vonage VoIP connection. We are very satisfied with the hub, and therefore purchased an Ooma Telo for a second location. This review describes our Ooma Telo experience so far, and compares it to the Hub/Scout.

The Telo is well designed and sleek. The controls are touch controls and very sensitive. There is a USB port in the back - presumably for future expansion. Like the hub, there are two RJ45 ethernet jacks - one to connect to the "internet", and the second to connect to one's home network. There are also two RJ11 phone jacks. One to connect to your existing landline, should you have one, and decide to integrate the landline and Telo. The other is to connect to your phone.

The setup instructions are simple. While it is recommended that the Telo be connected directly to your cable/dsl/wimax modem (i.e. before your router), it works equally well after the router. We chose to connect the Telo to the router rather than the modem.

We were treated to a red & blue patriotic light show for about 20 minutes when the Telo was first plugged in, while it apparently downloaded firmware/software updates. I was a little puzzled by this, but presumably there have been updates from the release date (October 1) to our purchase date (October 3), or the first set of units were shipped without the latest firmware/software on them. In either event, there has been a second firmware/software update since then, so clearly Ooma are keen to improve Telo as feedback/complaints from early adopters rolls in.

Unlike the Hub, the Telo doesn't support the Scout. But this doesn't mean the Telo cannot provide a dial tone at other phone jacks in your house. For this, simply connect a splitter to the phone jack in the Telo, plug one line into the telephone adjacent to the Telo, and the second into the nearest wall jack. If the phone wiring in your house is intact, you should be able to connect a standard wired phone to any other phone jack. The Ooma Hub also supports this feature, which isn't readily documented in Ooma's product literature.

The Telo and Hub are indistinguishable in every aspect of call quality. Off course the Telo supports up to four DECT 6.0 handsets, and Telo to Telo calls will offer HD voice. The Telo will also support Bluetooth, and cell-phone integration. Although these features will be available in future firmware/software updates.

There are differences in the level and cost of service that I have described below.

For current Ooma Hub owners:

Ooma Core includes 5000 minutes a month, voicemail and caller-id and is free of regulatory fees for the life of the hub.
Ooma Premiere includes a range of additional features, including a second line, 3-way calling, multi-ring, call fowarding and many others. This costs $9.99 a month or $99 a year.

For future Ooma Hub owners:

Ooma Core will include 5000 minutes a month and voicemail. From the second year, it will cost $12/yr to recover regulatory fees.
Ooma Premiere will include enhanced voicemail, and the other premiere features. Ooma Premiere will cost $9.99 a month or $120 a year.

For Ooma Telo:

Ooma core includes 5000 mins/month & voicemail, and $12/yr from the second year on to recover regulatory fees.
Ooma Premiere will include enhanced voicemail, and the other premiere features at $9.99 a month or $120 a year.

For both the Hub and Telo, the cost of Premiere includes either a free handset a year (a $49 value), or a free number port (a $39 value).

This change in pricing strategy has made some claim that Ooma is no longer "free".

Well, it never was, although current Hub owners will not have to spend another dime for the life of their unit.

New Hub & Telo users receive 5000 mins/month and voicemail for the cost of the unit, and have to pay $12/year from the second year onwards to cover regulatory fees.
In my opinion Ooma continues to remain a good value when compared to other VoIP providers, although clearly early Hub adopters received a better deal than Telo users.

I want to note two other things that are common to the Hub and Telo. Our number ports were quick and efficient. And, while customer service can be difficult to reach, there is excellent support available from the Ooma community on Ooma's website forums. The Ooma employees who moderate the forums also provide support in a very timely manner.

Bottom-line, if you have Vonage or Packet8, or have phone bundled in with your cable, strongly consider getting a Telo. You will save money for service that is as good or better. With the Hub, we saw savings with the first six months. With the Telo it will be about 14 months before we start seeing savings.

The Netgear Powerline AV 200 Wireless-N Extender Kit defiantly improved my wireless signal 100%. My main router(Netgear WNR834B-100NAS Wireless N Router) is located across the house from my room and my signal was terrible. I had bought the new Xbox 360 250GB Console with Kinect and thought the wireless signal from my xbox would reach my router, but it only had a 1 bar signal. so I looked around on Amazon and found this product. The day I received the Powerline it took me about 20 minutes to set it up. I noticed that certain wall outlets receive signals differently. So you might have to try a few wall outlets before you can get the most out of your Powerline. The thing I liked about it is it shows a red light if your receiving a link rate of less than 50 Mbps, a Yellow light for a link rate between 50 and 80 Mbps, and a green light for a link rate of 80 Mbps or more. On my Current setup I'm currently receiving 96 Mbps. Now I am playing my Xbox games Lag free with all Four Bars while I'm even on my laptop. Before, the Netflix on my Xbox would only show a one bar signal strength, now I get all four bars and watch movies and TV shows in HD quality! My only complaint with this product is it does basically take up the whole wall outlet, but its worth the signal.

I needed a new printer and had considered the previous generation wireless printer from HP, but the reviews I read failed to convince me that I would be satisfied with it's speed and print quality.

When the HP 6840 came out I was very interested, and after reading various reviews about it's performance and print quality I decided it was what I was looking for.

I have the Linksys wireless G router, and an HP notebook with wireless G. I found the setup instructions to be easy to read and follow. I have read several complaints about needing to plug the printer into the router with an ethernet cable (which is supplied) during initial setup, but this is a minor issue, and once it's completed you don't have to do it again.

The wireless connectivity is very good, and print speed and quality are very good. I am very happy with this printer and highly recommend it! I bought it from CompUsa for $169.00.
