Cisco-Linksys PLE200 PowerLine AV Ethernet Adapter Review

Cisco-Linksys PLE200 PowerLine AV Ethernet Adapter
Average Reviews:

I'll keep this short and sweet. There were a few posts about the benefits upgrading the firmware, to make these units compatible with the current homeplug av stnndards.

I tried updating three units. Two upgraded just fine. The third bricked.

Dead as the parrot in the Monty Python sketch. And unlike the routers, there is no reset option.

The unit is out of warranty. So Linksys said "Sorry Charlie". Even though their software and firmware update killed the machine.

So if you buy these new or used, beware. There is much truth to the firmware upgrade warnings posted here on Amazon.

NETGEAR Xbox 360 Internet Connection Kit XETB10GM Review

NETGEAR Xbox 360 Internet Connection Kit XETB10GM
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

If you are like me, you have some form of high-speed internet coming into your house. You probably have Cable or DSL or something else, and then a "main" router where there the Internet comes from "out there" to "in here". You probably then have it served up with a wireless router. Me? I have Comcast cable piped into a NETGEAR WNR2000 Wireless-N Router. From there, I send the wires out to three computers in the room for my wife and kids. I then use the wireless with my notebook around Works pretty well.

But I have an office upstairs, and I wanted to put a server up there as well as a notebook on a desk for my use. That's two computers. Now the notebook has a wireless care built in, but the server doesn't, and I loathed the idea of putting a wireless card in a desktop. I could run a wire up through the house, but what a pain in the butt. So I needed to figure out how to get my wireless signal up to a router in my office.
I went to Best Buy and I got a Linksys Bridge. It was a bit tricky to set up, but I did, and it worked pretty well. It was somewhat intermittent, but I was able to have switch up in my office with connectivity to any number of machines.

But then, out of nowhere, the thing stopped working. It just bricked itself. No lights, no power, no nothing. Great. So, off to Best Buy again, with a determination not buy that Linksys Bridge again. So the nice sales gal there pointed me to a NetGear Gaming router that is basically a wireless bridge. I guess that these things are very popular for gaming consoles so they market them mostly to gamers. So I'm slowly walking out, and this other guy comes up to me and says "That will work for what you want, but I can show you something that is faster and more reliable".
Well, I don't know about you, but I am into faster and more reliable, so I followed him, and he showed me this kit.

I was a bit hesitant at first, as it seemed a bit strange to pump my connection through my household power lines and the box explicitly calls it an "XBox 360" kit (that gaming thing again), but the guy said it works perfectly for a regular network and that he'd personally take my return if it didn't work exactly like I wanted.

Well, as far as I can tell, he'll never see me again. This thing worked like a charm. It was pathetically easy to install - network cable out of my router, into device, which I plugged into the wall. Then, up in the office, I plug in the other one, with a network cable out of it into my switch. Simple, clean, and easy. It worked immediately, and the total setup time (hardware only, no software to configure) was literally five minutes.
So far, it's working great. I now want to find out if I can buy one of these things and use it in yet another room. That would be even cooler, as we have a renter who'd really appreciate that.

All in all, a purchase that I'm really happy with.

HP Mini 311-1025NR 11.6-Inch Black Netbook Review

HP Mini 311-1025NR 11.6-Inch Black Netbook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

I purchased the netbook for my wife, but would not mind getting one for myself, too. This version of the HP 311 has enough RAM (2GB) and hard disk capacity (250GB), and it has Windows 7 Home Premium.

It is small and neat, the keyboard is quite ok, and the display/resolution is surprisingly good. Setup was automatic and simple, and soon the netbook was connected to our (hidden) WiFi. I connected it to my 46" Samsung TV (LN46A650A) to check out the HDMI connector and it looked very good. We haven't had a chance to test the battery life, so can not comment on that.

BTW, the price shown on Amazon was over $600, but I was charged for just over $500. Not cheap, but this is probably the best you can get in this class.

PePLink Balance 30 Review

PePLink Balance 30
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

I had a SYSWAN and was not very happy with it. I've read many reviews on Peplink and it seemed these were the best multi-wan routers. So I got this one.

I am not an expert on networks, but reasonably technical. The product worked, and I was able to get a connection with both up-links. However, the performance was very bad. It took forever to build up speed. Also the max speed was very low - I used 2x15mbps ADSLs, but I could not get much above 20.

The SYSWAN is so fast in getting the speed up and it has no problem going to 30. SYSWAN does not promise speed aggregation, but in many apps it is possible to achieve. Peplinks clearly promises aggregation, but it works very badly compared to SYSWAN.

Quite possibly if I was a network person I could configure it to work better, but I am not interested in building new knowledge areas. I just wanted a product that works well and fast. This wasn't it.

I have owned this router for almost two years. Although expensive, it is worth every penny. I have it connected to my DSL and cable modems. I get incredible download and upload speeds. Skype works like a dream. And, I have had no problems whatsoever. The router setup is relatively easy. If you need a multiwan router the Peplink 30 is worth considering.

Worked fine out of the box, no complicated setup. Worked OK through two different power strips, but got slightly better results using it directly in the wall socket, and putting the power strip into the included plug.

NOTE: this requires a standard two port wall socket arrangement (there is an additional ground for a second socket), which isn't detailed in the documentation, so if you have unusual power sockets this may not work.

TRENDnet 450 Mbps Dual Band Wireless N USB Adapter TEW-684UB (Black) Review

TRENDnet 450 Mbps Dual Band Wireless N USB Adapter TEW-684UB (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

Having used the Netgear WNDA3100 and the Cisco AE1000 adapters previously this adapter beats them handsdown.
Neither of the previous adapters could maintain near the 300Mbps advertised, they would typically fluctuate between 54 & 150 Mbps (maybe hitting about 200Mpbs on 5mHz channel), but never holding a constant signal. The TrandNet holds 450Mbsp constantly. I am using the Cisco E4200 router (it also performed well on a Neatgear n750 router).
Range and signal reception are both FAR better than either of the mentioned USB thumb-tpye adapters.
This is the way to go if you need a high speed network connection for streaming or gaming and have a router that supports 450Mbps.

This device looks like it will do what I want if I invest days in learning how to use it. The manual (a PDF you can download when you finally get the router working) is over 900 pages and is written in such a way as to make simple functions, such as port forwarding, as difficult as complex operations.

I encountered problems with it as soon as I tried to set it up. It went into an unresponsive state and needed to be reset. I had to repeat all of the work I had already done.

A couple of annoyances:

* When using the Web interface, the router regularly freezes up. If I hit Refresh I get logged out.

* The default setting for the Web interface is HTTPS with an invalid certificate.

* Several error states cause a helpful error message to pop up. It says "Error Message."

The firmware it came with was two versions old. I updated the firmware to fix one problem and the router went unresponsive again. The support site has a Web form, which I filled out. I am still waiting for a response to that. I called US technical support and was answered by a very offhand individual. The problem was fixed by simply flushing the browser cache. I then asked the support guy how to I fix the invalid certificate problem. He went all vague and demonstrated immediately that he had no knowledge of the device.

This router is suitable only for hobbyists with lots of time on their hands. I have to work for my living and do not have much more time to tinker with it. Another couple of hours and both the units I bought will be returned.

eSafeKids is the best tool to monitor my daughter on her internet activities. I can't shut down home internet connection since my daughter needs internet to finish her homework. But she spends more than half of her time to download and watch and listen movies from YouTube, which is not related to her homework at all. Thanks God, I was instroduced with eSafeKids and plugged into my home internet right away. Magically, YouTube is blocked for my daughter's computer. She was mad, but I have been so glad, because she can concentrate on her homework. I recommend strongly eSafeKids to the family, who wish their kids can go to nice universities, like UC San Diego, my daughter's university.

Asus EeeBox EBXB202-BLK-X0081 Desktop PC (1.6 GHz Intel Atom N270 Processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, XP Home) Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

As much as I regret it, I have no choice but to return this machine because of its unacceptable online performance. But, let me first provide a brief account of my experience with the EeeBox... Desktop PC. For the sake of complete disclosure, my unit came in 'white'.

Setup:
------
Very easy. The machine comes in a nice little box that hosts its body, the USB keyboard, USB mouse, desktop stand, mounting bracket if it is to be attached to a monitor, Wi-Fi antenna, DVI to VGA adapter, power adapter, manuals, disks, etc. Everything is very tightly and securely packed.

For the physical setup you may need a flat and a Phillips screwdriver if the PC is to be mounted on the back of a monitor. I didn't even notice until the Asus came that certain monitors allow for the installation of a mounting bracket on their back - apparently this is a standard - and the little Asus can be made to sit there - 4 screws to attach the bracket to the monitor and the bracket itself has ONE thumb screw that's sufficient to attach the PC's body to it.

There is only a DVI interface for the video but the supplied DVI-VGA adapter takes care of those monitors that do not support DVI.

The Wi-Fi antenna is easily attached (screwed in) to the body. To my surprise, my white box came with a black antenna but, since I decided to keep it hanging on the back of the monitor, the color mismatch did not bother me.

Once the keyboard and mouse are plugged in and the machine is powered up Windows XP installs itself. It's as easy as providing the user's name.

The manual explains exactly how to set up the Wi-Fi and/or the wired network connection.

The entire setup, physical and software can be completed in less than one hour and it presents no major challenges.

A BIG plus about the setup is that practically there is ZERO bloatware. No AOL, Norton Whatever or software that's set to expire in 30 days appears to be running. In fact, the only thing that you see on the desktop, once the XP installs is the Explorer icon, the trash can and, I believe, the Adobe reader.

Features and performance:
------------------------
On the PC's sides there are 4 USB ports of which 2 are taken by the keyboard and the mouse, an Ethernet port, DVI port and, I believe, a memory stick reader - didn't check exactly which standards are supported.

The optical mouse, while small, appears to be working well. The small keyboard is not 'typist quality' but it's usable. Of course, keyboards and mice are easy to replace.

The machine, as expected, is very quiet and it stays cool while running.

There are no speakers but audio in and out ports are present to allow for headphones/speakers and a microphone or some other audio source.

There is no CD/DVD/BD drive but one could be easily attached via the USB.

As far as running installed sapplications, performance appears to be good. However, any application that involved an on-line component had trouble running. My Wi-Fi router is providing for several computers, a PS3, an online printer and a PSP prior to EeeBox's arrival and performance was always adequate for each unit. The EeeBox, while properly configured - and the Wi-Fi monitor did show near-100% signal strength - was barely communicating with the outside world. It was consistently slow while its other fellow machines on the network were as happy and as fast as ever. It took me a couple of hours and several tries simply to install Google's Chrome browser. The Asus 'upgrades' site seemed to take its time to the extent that, several hours later, a 10MB upgrade received about one third of the data over HTTP and FTP failed altogether. The Adobe Flash player installed itself in about 20 minutes that that's how long it took for a Java update. Amazon's site was slow and so were Yahoo, CNN, Google News. All of the above was within the context of other of our computers whizzing along without any problems whatsoever. I did not test a 'wired' connection.

Conclusion and recommendation:
------------------------------
When ordering this machine I was aware of its lacking a CD/DVD drive and speakers and its CPU, graphics and memory limitations and I accepted those limitations. But, as I stated from the beginning, I am returning it because of its unacceptably poor online performance over Wi-Fi. It is possible that there was something not quite right with this particular box so everyone should be aware that I am evaluating ONE specific machine here, the one that I received.

It is possible that the performance is better over a wired connection but I did not test that.

Had this machine performed better online, it would have been an easy 5-stars for design, ease of setup and functionality.

Cisco-Linksys Refurb Imo Dual-Band Wireless-N Gaming and Video Adapter Review

Cisco-Linksys Refurb Imo Dual-Band Wireless-N Gaming and Video Adapter

I ordered this refurb to see whether or not it would work out well - better than my linksys wga-600's (which this product replaces) - and the short answer is no, it didn't work out well. Basically it picks up the primary channel of the Wireless-N fine on my D-Link router, but the secondary channel is totally wrong. Tried it on both 2.4 and 5Ghz frequencies, tried switching the channel, tried the latest firmware, all the same stuff. It basically kills the ping time (best was 4ms right next to the router when I can get <1ms from the other side of my house) and the throughput was horrendous (best was about 512kbps). Tech support was a joke and unhelpful. It might work better in an all linksys environment - but maybe not.

ASUS (RT-N56U) Black Diamond Dual Band Wireless-N 600 Router, Hardware NAT, 5 Internal Antennas, AI Radar and Graphical Traffic Monitor Review

ASUS (RT-N56U) Black Diamond Dual Band Wireless-N 600 Router, Hardware NAT, 5 Internal Antennas, AI Radar and Graphical Traffic Monitor

We are a heavy intenet using famiily. If we aren't streaming Netflix or Roku, we have phones and computers all competing for bandwidth. I tried the new Linksys e4200, it was OK until too many people logged on wirelessly and started hogging bandwidth. The e4200 would really drop down in speed while it tried to deal with all of the wireless activity. So, I tried the WNDR3700 (v.98 firmware) The WNDR3700 has a fast processor and can handle a lot of wired and wireless users simultaneously. But, the WNDR3700 seemed to "hang" about once an hour for reasons unknown. When I say "hang", it might take 5 seconds to load a web page instead of the usually instantaneous load speed. It got a little annoying.

So, I picked up the ASUS RT-N56U router after reading all the reviews and tests on smallnetbuilder dot com. I have to say that this router is ridiculously fast (at least twice as fast as the WNDR3700) and has better reception throughout my entire house. In a location that I used to max out at about 7MB/s with the WNDR3700. I can now sustain 31MB/s in the same location. I have pretty much- 5 bars of wireless reception where I used to have 2 or 3 bars.

The ASUS RT-N56U is pretty easy to set up and I like the physical appearance too. Throw in the fact that it is smokin' fast and has great coverage and I think I got a heck of a deal for $127.

Highly recommended.

by the way, I just noticed that another reviewer was having problems with iPhones not connecting. Our iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPad, and Android phones are logging on fine, no issues.

*** UPDATE 3/28/11 So far, the RT-N56U is performing perfectly and all DD-WRT bridges are connecting at highest rate. I am running firmware 1.0.1.2
I tried to update to the beta 7.0.1.21 as well as the 1.0.1.3 firmware and all of a sudden some laptops had very laggy connections. Instead of instantaneous webpage loads, it would take literally 5 seconds to load??? So, I reverted back to 1.0.1.2 and all devices are running wide open again.

+++ UPDATE 4/30/11 Still running perfectly since new with no reboots. Simply awesome.

Actiontec Ethernet over Coax MoCA Adapter Review

Actiontec Ethernet over Coax MoCA Adapter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

I've got Verizon's FIOS service -- internet, cable and phone. When they did the install, I had the technician bring the internet connection into the house from the ONT via an ethernet cable, instead of having it ride on the same coax from the ONT that the cable signal comes in on. They will do this for you if you ask.

I tried for awhile using the Actiontec router that Verizon had provided, but it turned out to be crap. It's wireless is only b/g, not n, and it was a bit spotty in and around my house. It's LAN ports are only 100 mbps, not gigabit. Then, after a few months, one then another of it's LAN ports just stopped working.

So, I decided to completely ditch the Actiontec router that Verizon provided and use my own SMC wireless gigabit router (SMC SMCWGBR14-N Barricade N ProMax Draft 11n Wireless Gigabit Broadband Router) which had worked awesomely with the DSL service I had before I made the switch to FIOS.

To do this, I connected the ethernet cable coming in from the ONT to the WAN port on my router. I had to manually set my router's MAC address to the MAC address that the Actiontec router had been using in order for my router to make the connection with Verizon's central office gear. The Actiontec router's MAC address was printed on a sticker stuck on the side of the Actiontec router, so it was easy to figure out.

After that, I connected the ethernet port on this MoCA adapter to one of my router's LAN ports and the coax connector on this MoCa adapter to the same coax cable that had been connected to the MoCA coax port on the Actiontec router.

I had powered down the set top boxes in the house before doing all of this. To bring everything back up, I first powered up the MoCA adapter. Once it had established a connection to my router, I then powered up the set top boxes in the house. They connected to this MoCA adapter right off and were each assigned an IP address by my router.

With that, everything was and continues to be working fine, including video on demand, the cable guide, etc. It's great to be completely rid of the Actiontec router provided by Verizon. Yeah, it cost me $85 for the MoCA adapter, but now I'm back in control of my network again and am able to use a high performance, reliable wireless router.

A bit strange that Actiontec can make a great MoCA adapter but a crap router. Presumably, the difference is the MoCA adapter I'm using I paid for while the router Verizon provided Verizon paid for. The cheaper the better and quality be damned apparently is Verizon's motto.

Speaking of which... Now, if someone would just come up with a way to work around the absurdly low capacity hard drive and disabled USB port in the crap Motorola DVR set top box that Verizon provided... LOL
