If you're not into configuring RAID setups manually and care about your data, then this product is for you. It's built rock solid in the USA. It's the easiest, biggest, coolest storage drive system I've ever seen in 20 years of IT.

It's so easy your grandma could use it.

Drives slide in perfectly and snap in place. Plug it in, wait for it to appear on the network and it just works. Mac? PC? Linux? Yep. Just a 7.76TB samba volume at 1000T. Knowing your stuff is backed up in a way that is redundant, fast, reliable and totally transparent to your normal daily routine is priceless, isn't it?

I know you have a ton of stuff on a single USB external HD somewhere, and the odds are, one day that backup will fail. Drives. Just. Fail. Even one or two of the drives you buy with your Drobo will probably eventually fail! But when one fails, you take it out, put a new one in and go about your day while Drobo takes care of the rest. Convenience like this is just as priceless as speed+redundancy.

If you don't care about losing priceless memories, photos, music and videos forever, stick with what you have. If you care at all about your stuff and don't have a ton of spare time to muck with RAID controllers, wires and cables, get a Drobo FS and start using it ASAP. Awesome!

I urge you to get your Drobo FS with a good UPS system:

Preventing power spikes and short outages from affecting the Drobo is an absolute must.

If you're not planning on using your Drobo with Gigabit ethernet, don't get this one -- it has ONLY an ethernet port. Instead, get Drobo S 5-Bay USB 2.0/FireWire 800/eSATA Storage Array DRDR3A21 and share it from a host PC/Mac.

Better yet, upgrade your network to Gigabit with TRENDnet 4-Port Gigabit Firewall Router TWG-BRF114 (Black) or TRENDnet 300 Mbps Wireless N Gigabit Router TEW-639GR (Black). The speed increase in going from 10/100 to gigabit is definitely noticeable and is what you must have to get the full speed transferring files to and from a Drobo FS.

The only product I would recommend more than this one is the 8-bay version DroboPro FS-8 bay Gigabit Ethernet Network Attached Storage DRDS3A21. The reasoning is that you can still get five 2TB drives with it, have the same amount of storage space as this product, and make future upgrades even faster and easier.
