Hawking Technology HWMP1 Wireless Multimedia Control Pad Review

Hawking Technology HWMP1 Wireless Multimedia Control Pad
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

I'm very leery of purchasing anything these days that has no review to be found online. But, the description was exactly what I was looking for to control my HTPC, so I rolled the dice.

Arrived this morning. First impression - It's tiny. Just slightly larger than a credit card. Feels very good in hand, sturdy, like it can be dropped a few times and not break. The USB was stuck in it's holder. After prying it out, I plugged it in. Works perfectly!

Touchpad -
The touchpad is exactly what you'd expect. Kudos to Hawking for the accelerometer. When you pick up the remote, up is always "up", which is nice. I haven't gotten the rotate feature to work yet, but I haven't tried much nor care much. The circle button acts as a right mouse button. Scrolling and zooming can sometimes be confused with each other, but it's not that big a deal. Very responsive, easy to use.

Keyboard -
The Keyboard toggle switch is easy - just hold down the button for a second or so and the backlight is on indicating keyboard mode. Typing is very fast - the backlight flicks slightly after each keypress as a confirmation. So far it seems pretty intuitive with the "shift" commands. if you toggle to numbers, it stays there until you toggle back. Shift is only on for one press. Smart.

I'm happy my gamble paid off. This will fit nicely in the Living Room remote tray. Very tiny, but very useable. Thanks Hawking!

Toshiba Mini NB205-N210 (NB200 series) 10.1-Inch Black Netbook Review

Toshiba Mini NB205-N210 (NB200 series) 10.1-Inch Black Netbook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

I just got my NB205 last Saturday. So these are initial, early impressions.

#1 (terrible first impression): It took all afternoon and into the evening to get the unit talking to my LinkSys WRT54G wireless router. The wireless communication was connected, the router had assigned an IP address, but the NB205 refused to get it. It sat at "acquiring IP address" until it timed out. I have a static IP block reserved on my router, so I gave the NB205 a static IP address and filled in the gateway and DNS server IPs, and it *still* wouldn't talk. In technical parlance, it wasn't just a problem with ARP - the entire transport layer simply wasn't working.

A wired connection to the router worked fine. But that wasn't a workaround that I was prepared to accept.

I researched on the Web and found that various Toshiba models seem to have a lot of trouble with wireless, and that there are probably a hundred different things that people said finally got theirs working.

What finally worked for me was to turn off WEP security on both the router and the NB205. That immediately got them talking, at the expense of breaking all of my other wireless links (two computers and a Wii). Then I turned WEP back on, and they stayed talking. No problems since. EDITED: after over two months, still no problem. It was just the one-time startup.

#2 (good): The battery life is pretty danged long. Maybe not the claimed nine hours, but seven or eight (with WiFi turned off and using power-saver profile). I suspect that a good part of that comes from using an e-IPS display.

#3 (bad but expected): The manual is provided on the hard drive, not in print. The manual is disorganized and mostly useless. This seems to be par for the course for modern computers.

#4 (very slightly bad): The manual says that if you shut the unit down by closing the lid (sleep mode, hibernate, or whatever) that when you open the lid it'll start back up. It doesn't. You have to press the power button. EDITED: It will come back on automatically if you've left it plugged into AC power the whole time. It doesn't if it's unplugged, which for me is pretty much "always".

#5 EDITED: (very annoying until I figured out what was wrong): I had given up on using Sleep/Standby mode because about half of the time when I turned it back on the unit completely rebooted. Hibernate mode always seemed to work. The problem turned out to be that one of the latches for the battery pack wasn't locked, and the netbook would lose power if the unit was lifted in a way that tried to separate the pack from the main unit. So it was my own error, but I learned to pay attention to those latches.

#6 (generally good): I got this netbook specifically for writing. The keyboard seemed to be the best available in the netbook form factor, and I'm finding the keyboard to be quite usable for extended typing sessions. A couple of keys got relocated into funky positions, though. (Maybe other netbook keyboards do the same, I don't know.)

#7 (good): The touchpad is the first one that I've found to be actually usable.

#8 (mildly concerning): I had to turn off the vibration alerts because every time I click the touchpad, it sets off the vibration detector.

So... good keyboard, good touchpad, good display, good battery life. That's what I needed, and it's working out well. But I have collected some scars from the rough edges of getting it set up and the power on/off arrangements.

FIVE DAYS LATER (an update): I'm really enjoying this little guy. I finally got everything configured the way that I want, and I love working with it. My only day-to-day complaint is a silly one: I sometimes write while lying down, with my legs bent and the netbook propped against my legs, and in that position the clicker buttons on the touchpad rest against my belly and tend to click when I don't want them to. :-) I've learned to use Fn-F9 to disable the touchpad while I'm doing that.

Cradlepoint MBR1000 Review

Cradlepoint MBR1000
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

I purchased this unit about 14 months ago. It was purchased from [....]. I had decided to finally get my parents some sort of high speed internet because dial up just wasn't cutting it. They live in the woods about 5 miles from the I-5 freeway but DSL or Cable doesn't come down the road. It goes right by the end of it but not down it. So for Christmas of '08 I went to Sprint and purchased the Air Card, well the card was free just had to sign up for a 1 year contract. I asked them about a router for this and they told me to visit [...] and look at Cradlepoint. I found the MBR1000 and when I buy something I want to make sure it is the best. So I purchased it. Got it in about 4 days. Once I figure out where I was going to get the best signal for the air card it took me about 10 minutes to set up the router, air car, and my parents computers. I have had no trouble with it. I think the LOS (Line of Sight) is underestimated. I purchase a range booster for it as well and the neighbor said he could get 1-2 bars of signal (Router signal not modem) at his place. He is about 100yds from my parents house with a couple of trees in the way is all. We unplugged the range booster and the signal stayed the same. Turns out the Router itself was getting that range. He could sit out on his deck and use his laptop with 1meg download speeds. I would recommend this product to anyone. As a matter of fact a close friend of mine doesn't have high speed internet at her house and she wants to get the same thing that my parents have. I am going to recommend the MBR1000 especially since it has gone down in price since I purchased it. I was astounded by the range it can get. I did however have to purchase an antenna for the modem itself because it wasn't the best cell signal in that area but I went from 1-2 bars, 2nd bar flashing to 3 solid bars of signal with the external antenna mounted on the deck. DO NOT but directional range booster antennas because the cell companies will not tell you where the towers are so you can aim it. The margin of error in pointing one of those is too small to get it. I used a Trucker antenna from Wilson Electronics that works great. I hope someone finds this useful and makes a decision based on this review.

I have only had to restart it one time in 2 years. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because the indicator lights are inside the housing, so you CAN'T SEE IT unless you take the front access panel off. Since I installed it about 12 ft high, I would LOVE to look up and see the status lights.

Cisco-Linksys E4200 Maximum Performance Simultaneous Dual-Band Wireless-N Router Review

Cisco-Linksys E4200 Maximum Performance Simultaneous Dual-Band Wireless-N Router
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

I would say the E4200 router provides a solid connection, roughly the same throughput performance as the NETGEAR N750 450 Mbps Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router WNDR4000 (another 450 Mbps router), easy setup with `Cisco Connect', and the lack of LED lights in the front of the router really helps with the light pollution on the office desk.

Pros:
* Supports 3 data stream (450 Mbps) on the 5 GHz band. The tested throughput on the 5 GHz band was 129 Mbps up and 148 Mbps down (laptop with Intel 6300 wifi card to a server with a wired connection). About 15% faster then my old WNDR3700 router, but I was hoping for a 50% increase (300 Mbps -> 450 Mbps).
* Easy to setup with the `Cisco Connect' application. The application guides you in setting up the wireless security, parental control, and guest network.
* No issues connecting to the router with my PS3, Windows Home Server, Vulkano, and iPad

Con:
* Only 2 data stream (300 Mbps) on the 2.4 GHz band. The tested throughput on the 2.4 GHz band was 60 Mbps up and 70 Mbps down
* No extra features like WDS repeating/bridge
* WNDR4000 has better parental control features

Summary:
Having the E4200 and WNDR4000, the E4200 has roughly the same throughput performance as the WNDR4000 (134 Mbps up and 140 Mbps down on the 5 GHz band). The difference between the two comes down to features. The E4200 has a great setup utility that will allow any newbie to configure the router with ease. The WNDR4000 provides more useful features such as WDS repeating and traffic meter. As for the range of the router, I really can't comment on it due to living in a small apartment.

Some extra background info:
One thing that I feel is missing in the `router comparison table' is the processor speed. The CPU speed gives you an idea about the performance of the router. So here is what I found on the internet.
E1200 - 300 MHz CPU with 32MB RAM and 4MB Flash
E1500 - 300 MHz CPU with 32MB RAM and 8MB Flash
E2500 - 300 MHz CPU with 64MB RAM and 8MB Flash
E3000 - 480 MHz CPU with 64MB RAM and 8MB Flash
E4200 - 480 MHz CPU with 64MB RAM and 16MB Flash

Creative Labs Sound Blaster Wireless Audio Transmitter and Receiver Bundle Review

Creative Labs Sound Blaster Wireless Audio Transmitter and Receiver Bundle
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

Having used a myriad of devices from the squeezboox boom and the squeezebox duet system -- as well as a few other devices that are not worth mentioning, I'll say that this is by far the easiest to use, install and operate.

Let me walk you through my set-up ... which took about 10 minutes ...

1. Unpacked the box and did away with all the plastic detritus.
2. Installed and registered the software on my laptop.
3. Plugged in the transmitter to a USB port in the back.
4. Rebooted my laptop, turned on iTunes and played a U2 album.
5. Plugged in the receiver (using a nicer set of cables) to my Sony Stereo Receiver on Aux 3. Was tempted to go optical.
6. Hit the find button on the underside of the little device and walked away.
7. 15 seconds later -- music played.
8. Stuck the batteries in the remote and turned it up.

That simple and absolutely no stumbling blocks to speak of.

Sound Quality? -- Better than I expected for this, but I wasn't looking for Mark Levinson to come out of my office and sit down on the couch with a glass of wine. The sound quality is more than adequate for casual home listening and the better your system is, the better the device will sound to you.

Responsiveness? -- I'm constantly unplugging the transmitter from my laptop and taking off somewhere, only to come back replug it back in, and find it working almost instantly and flawlessly. Windows and iTunes are not always asking questions or looking for drivers. It seems that whatever iTunes needed to do to make this thing be compatible with itself, was worked out ahead of time by Creative Labs and Apple. That's a first.

The Software -- is quite good and quite simple. You can customize it to play in zones, if that's your thing or adjust the quality of the sound and other minor changes. The software, from what I saw, doesn't appear to be a resource hog, nor has it been the culprit of crashes or bluescreens. If you don't use iTunes , you don't like to, or don't want to, this may be the only *real* problem one could face. The good thing is that it doesn't require you to depend on it as a player like other companies, or other devices do.

I can find no fault with this and I'm happy with the success of this device. I use it everyday now and I'm thoroughly pleased.

Well done ... a great idea to give as a gift for young or old as the ease of use with this is simple and the learning curve low. How about that for innovation?

Western Digital WD Livewire Powerline AV Network Kit Review

Western Digital WD Livewire Powerline AV Network Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

I think if many of us could build a new house to our specifications that no doubt at the top of a lot of our lists for "must haves" would be Ethernet/network connections in almost every room. In fact, it's not unusual to see houses that are being built this way standard nowadays -- with all the gadgets, set top boxes, computers and other electronic devices that can hook up to the Internet the need for a connected house is constantly growing. Sure, you could do wireless -- but it has it's limitations, and it can be flaky when streaming HD media, not to mention that it has problems traveling through metal objects and is subject to interference. So what is the homeowner or apartment dweller to do when they don't have connections to ever room readily available? The answer is as simple as two little black boxes.

The WD Livewire Powerline kit is one of the best electronic "gadget-enabling" devices I have used in a long time. At first I was skeptical of the claims of 200 megabits per second, and even more skeptical of how it could work over the power lines. However after receiving the product and using it any doubts I had were blown away. This thing is amazing and delivers excactly what it promises.

It's as simple as the box says it is. You simply plug one end into the wall near an existing network connection and hook a standard ethernet cable (included) up to your home network or broadband connection. Then plug the other one into the wall anywhere else in your house. No software to mess with, no complicated setup procedures, just instant connection. You literally can have this up and running in less than 5 minutes from when the box shows up at your door!

There are a few things to be aware of. First, this must be plugged directly into the wall socket. It cannot be plugged into a power strip, surge protector or battery backup. Second, the condition of the wiring in your home will affect your speeds. If you have an older home where wiring did not follow standards (from about the early to mid 70s forward) you may not be able to achieve the full 200mbps. Our home was built in 1977 and speed tests show that I was able to achieve right around 195-196mbps. Impressive!

They offer 4 ports on each box, so you can plug in multiple devices as each location. They also transmit the data in 128-bit encryption, which is automatic, so you can feel safe that your data is protected even if your neighbor has a pair of these as well (though the chances of you running into each other are slim -- by the time it makes it out of your house, through the electric company equipment and into theirs the signal will be highly degraded).

The best part of it all -- no wires. Just two very small boxes that you can tuck away out of sight. Want to hook up your HDTV to your home network or the internet? Just plug and play! Moving it to a new room? Just unplug and go -- it really is that simple.

For the more geeky amongst us, the product also comes with a CD you can use to update the firmware, setup network restrictions and do a few other technical things on the boxes themselves. However, the use of the CD is completely optional -- you don't need to worry about fooling with it unless you want to dive into the really geeky side of the product.

So if you have a HDTV, computers, gaming system or other gadgets you want to hook up and wireless just won't cut it, or you don't want to run cables throughout the house, then this Livewire kit is the perfect answer. Plug it in and start surfing!

NETGEAR XAV101 Powerline AV Ethernet Adapter Review

NETGEAR XAV101 Powerline AV Ethernet Adapter
Average Reviews:

Plugged it in and it just worked. I added a media center extender out in our garage so we can watch live tv, recorded shows, listen to music while running on a treadmill. Used this adaptor to get network connectivity in the garage since the wireless signal was not good enough to stream video reliably. Powerline adaptor worked perfectly.

Monster PowerNet 300 Power Line Network Module with Clean Power Review

Monster PowerNet 300 Power Line Network Module with Clean Power
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

I purchased 3 of the powernet 300's, thinking I would have the answer to all my streaming problems because I really like streaming in HDX. The "orange" light keeps coming on after I have meticulously and sucessfully paired them together. The orange light indicates substandard signal. Yet, when I wire directly from my Clear modem the speed is consistly between 6MBS -10MBS. Somewhere, the signal keeps dropping. These devices are tedious to keep in sync. When you call for support, be prepared to stay online from 30 minutes to an hour just to speak to a representative. It is almost impossible to figure if you have a faulty box or just not configuring your system correctly. For all the difficulty these boxes should be half the price. Maybe then, I wouldn't be so disappointed by all the time I have to put in just to get them to function correctly.

D-Link DP-300U 10/100TX 1-USB Port 2-Parallel Port Print Server Review

D-Link DP-300U 10/100TX 1-USB Port 2-Parallel Port Print Server
Average Reviews:

Though not very explicitly described as the DP300U, I took a chance and ordered it. It was indeed what I expected when it arrived several days ahead of schedule. I put the print server on a mac/pc wired/wirless home network, effectively replacing two older desktop machines. This unit has two parallel ports and one USB port, and connects to a network router via an ethernet cable. (No cables are supplied, but this was no surprise.) There's also the inevitable power cord with transformer block plug, but this pleasingly small one doesn't hog too much space on the power strip. Setup was physically simple, but software-wise it was a bit of a challenge. Mac OS X requires (free) gimp-print and ghostscript software to allow postscript emulation on non-postscript printers. Gimp-print includes drivers for popular inkjet and laser printers, but I had to search the Web for a third-party OS X Samsung laser printer driver (also free, thanks UNIX community). Standard Windows XP drivers worked fine. After installing all the drivers and whatnot, setting up the print queues on the print server was pretty straightforward. My printers now work without having to be connected to aging desktop machines, and I can print wirelessly from a Mac or PC laptop in any room in the house. Very liberating.

Linksys PLTK300 PowerLine Network Kit Review

Linksys PLTK300 PowerLine Network Kit
Average Reviews:

My wi-fi experiences a problem in a certain part of the house. I had tried different routers including 'N' and the signal would randomly and frequently drop in this one area. I installed the PowerLine in under 30 minutes. The two computers connected have not experienced any outages ever since. Don't forget NOT to plug either unit into a power strip or APS. It will only work if the plugs are directly into the wall socket.

D-Link DIR-412 Mobile Wireless Router 3G, 11n-Based, 150Mbps Review

D-Link DIR-412 Mobile Wireless Router 3G, 11n-Based, 150Mbps
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

I bought this recently and ended up spending 1/2 a day getting it configured. I've configured my share of cisco, linksys and dlink routers over the years. This was just a little stubborn to accept the configuration. Once I got it working I got, at best, about 72 Mbps out of it on 3 different machines. I have a Wireless N Cisco router that reports a full 140 Mbps. Using the same machines with this Wireless N router each reports about 1/2 that connectivity rate. In use, it was obviously slower than the Cisco router.

I bought this for travel so that when I get stuck in a hotel or work location that only has wired connections I can setup a wireless network. For that, it will be ok. For the price, I was expecting more.

I don't plan to use the 3G connectivity, so it may perform better a data card than straight wireless.

It's ok. Not great.

ASUS G73SW-XA1 Republic of Gamers 17.3-Inch Gaming Laptop (Black) Review

ASUS G73SW-XA1 Republic of Gamers 17.3-Inch Gaming Laptop (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

***UPDATE: Amazon has sent a credit of 50.00 to compensate for the backpack and mouse.

I think that it goes without saying that this laptop gives you the most bang for the buck. I am not so much the PC gamer but I use applications which weigh heavily on the graphics card and processor. So far this laptop has been able to handle everything I can throw at it.

Pros:
i7 2.0ghz with (fixed) Sandy Bridge Technology
8GB RAM (expensive to upgrade to 16GB)
1.5GB Video Memory (beats best buys model by 512MB and 100.00)
750GB Hard Drive 7200RMP (again beats best buys model by 250GB)
LED Display, bright and does not wash out from multiple angles
Illuminated Keyboard
USB 3.0 (1x)

Cons:
Sound card...ugh. The Realtek sound card is of poor quality, the mic input is simply that. You cannot switch to line input, hopefully a fix for this will come in the future.
Bloatware, be prepared to spend some time uninstalling all of the useless tools and applications that come with this computer.
No backup disc, you must create your own (5 DVD's required)
Amazon said in description they would provide a gaming mouse and backpack, never arrived and was removed from product description... Shame on you Amazon.

The cons although annoying are not in any way deal breakers, this is a solid laptop with screaming performance from a great company. You will not find a better laptop for the price. 4 stars on this review, lost 1 star mainly for the sound card and bloatware. Amazon should make good on the backpack on mouse, those who rated the product 1 star because they did not get them should think about reviewing the laptop and not Amazon.
